Actually, the pale grey small font is pretty imperceptible as well. Greater contrast needed.
Modifiable background colour?
Enabling modifiable background colour (eg. white, mid grey, charcoal) might be an accessibility and usability solution as well. I agree the white is stark and tiring on the eyes.

I personally like the white, but I agree that being able to choose the background colour in the user settings would be a great idea.
Hate to whinge, but the white is actually giving me a headache. I know I can turn the brightness down, but then the pics are dull too. A changeable background colour would be so welcome.
I'm really struggling with the white background and my eyes hurt. I've ended up reducing brightness on my screen but that alters photo colours. The font is difficult to read too. Please enable us to modify the background colour!
This would get my vote also. I have no idea if that's a big technical ask but I find the grey harsh and glaring. Ditto the full colour thumbnails.
The B&W + grey front page fitted with the softer, gentler world that was Blip when I first joined. It's all a bit shouty now.
Modifiable background color is a great idea. Slider, maybe? I'm a fan of glass sculptor Dale Chihuly, and the gorgeous photos in his books are always printed on a black background.
