How can I back up my photos?

Do I have to manually download them individually?
I really want my third blip book, this silence about the blip shop is really unhelpful. I feel let down.

I haven't been able to think of a way of automating a backup. And believe me I've been thinking about it the last few days. Of course I have all the photos on my computer since I took them in the first place, but not the text. If you only want the photos, you can download each one (click on More info and then the download icon). But I want to save the photo and associated text.

After a few experiments, I am using a Chrome plugin called Webpage Screenshot. This lets you take a screenshot of a whole page, including the part that's off the screen. You can then save it -- I'm saving them as PDFs, but you can save them as images. Of course the text is not editable but at least you have a record of it. To save time you can use a keyboard shortcut to take the screenshot. But with over 1000 blips it's a laborious process -- I'm doing a few at a time when I have a spare 10 minutes.

Special note for blips: if you want the comments, before you do the screenshot you must scroll down until the comments show. They don't get loaded when you first visit the page, only if you scroll down.

I'm also worried, although don't have as many to back-up as many others. I'm using a mac and safari browser. Found it quite easy , but time consuming, to just use under file menu 'export as PDF' . As long as you've scrolled down a little so comments show it will save the whole lot wherever you want it at full resolution. Don't think you can avoid having to click on each day though.

the photos will still need to be downloaded separately though, as they aren't useable otherwise, although I suppose most have the photos already.
I was assuming we'd hear something if the site was going but Philip reckons things can just disappear overnight , I wish someone from Blipcentral would just reassure that all is ok :(

Update: Lesley, that's much more convenient. Export as PDF didn't have a keyboard shortcut, but I added one via System Preferences and now I can just view each blip, do Alt-Cmd-X, and hit return to save it. For some reason the photo appears twice, but the text is text that can be searched and copied, so it's a big improvement over my original method. Thanks!

PS yes, I have all the photos backed up, but I wanted the association of text and photos. I'd like to think we'd get some warning of The End, but sites have been known to have the plug pulled overnight when the hosting bill isn't paid.

I replied to this but it is stuck in pending approval? Perhaps as I have linked to some software and a price. I have used something that is working well for doing screenshots of the whole of a blip including comments that is called get fire shot without the spaces - google it. I used it for free for 30 days. Works in Firefox, IE and Chrome. Can save as PNG, JPeg or PDF.

Don't hold your breath ... there's no one at the helm at Blip Central any more as far as I can tell ... e-mails go unanswered, and the phone appears to have been disconnected. This ship is sinking, I'm afraid.

Remember that the British Library is archiving blip. You could always ask them for a copy, in the event of the site suddenly disappearing.

You already have a digital copy of all your shots, so that should not be too difficult -- why need to download something of which the original is yours?
Downloading your text is an entirely different matter; my 'problem', too. What I've written here so far is spontaneous. So I guess this just means I need to write my text on a word processing doc first and then copying and pasting it onto blip ... thereby creating my own original before sharing it, just as it is already happening with the photographs. But that is just old-fashioned me. I'll welcome any other ideas.

This isn't a quick answer but .. Blip does have an API which could easily facilitate retrieving posts and comments from the site. So if there is a blipping propeller head out there, please take one step forwards.

I have used the API in the past to download thumbnails of all my blips so I could make a collage.

I'll blow the dust off the code and see if I can modify it to do a complete backup if people are interested

This isnt much help if you have to back up old entries, but you could start this now: I've gotten in the habit of copying my text from the entry after it is posted. then I paste it into the "Caption" section in Lightroom so it's with the photo. for the first couple years I just put it in a monthly TextEdit file to save. Oh how I hope this all isn't necessary.

Halfway through downloading and saving each entry as a PDF - time consuming but anyone on a mac on Safari web browser just go to each entry and then click 'file'-'export as pdf'. Thats seems the best but time consuming way.

I'm not having much success saving file as PDF...the format is out of whack and the photo doesn't appear. So, I have opted to save as a webarchive file. I've checked that I can open the file when I have restarted computer and not connected to the Internet and it seems to work. Does anyone know if this is a bad move - to save as webarchive file on a mac?

Firefox print pages to pdf works for me, opening 18 blips at a time, scrolling to the end of each blip to show all the comments and printing all tabs.

I've tried to save a pdf on a Mac in Safari and on Firefox. No success. A tiny stripe of the photo appears at the bottom of a photo-sized box, and not all of the text comes over. There is no "Export as pdf" command. I have to go to Print, then save as pdf. But, as I said, it doesnt work. Any other ideas?

Re soozadays comments that's strange as I have Mac and Safari and in the file menu in Safari there's an 'export as PDF' . It gives the photo, twice for some reason, and as long as the comments have opened up will save them all. Maybe it's a newer version of Safari? If you can get it it's quite quick.

It's manual but it's doing the job. Exporting as a pdf (make sure you click away from the picture as it may not work and the option may be greyed out at first, and also saving high res of each image.

Veronica - please can you tell me how you set up your shortcut in system preferences. I've tried but I don't seem to have cracked it. Many thanks Wendy

Loose Canon I think if you could adapt the API it would be so useful to many of us. I've got too many blips to make individual copying feasible at the moment. Many thanks for making the offer.

I can't look at this until tomorrow as I'm out of the country. Just hope the website is still live!

If I find a solution I will publish it here

@Veronica: Thanks for reminding me about Preferences and Keyboard Shortcuts. It's working a treat (I used the same shortcut as you did). Now all I need is someway of automatically adding the date to the beginning of the filename…

LeeAnne--where do I find your email to find out how you are backing up? I looked on your Blip profile and didnt see it. Is there a profile here somewhere? I'm sorry, I dont know how to use FB very well.

I am on a Mac 10.7 with Safari, and so far I can't make any of these techniques work. I don't have the command "export to pdf". I am getting very confused with all these comments and additions here. Looks like some folks have figured it out, but I don't get it. Anybody got a simple set of instructions? Thanks.
