Every so often somebody I follow gets lost and I have to re-follow them. Does anyone know why it happens?

If I go to
* Browse
* Following
I see today that the people I follow have all disappeared - this means I am unable to view their photos. I have looked to see if they are still being followed by me and it appears that they are. What has happened and please can it be rectified?
