Geotagging

With the arrival of my Sony A7R4 I am able to include GPS co-ordinates in my photographs, by linking the camera to my iPhone. Something I could never do with my old Canon 5D3.

I see many people have included location tags on their blips.

Surely this is an automated process, and no-one is finding and manually updating the location of each shot on the world map? If so, it seems a waste of effort when the back system could reference the GPS co-ords?

Am I missing a trick?
