Since joining, I have followed a number of members, but I do not get notifications when they post anything new. Should this be happening or do we have to go through those we are following to see if they have posted anything. I get notifications for "stars’ added to my photos and when someone adds a comment, but that’s it.

True, I don't believe these sort of notifications are provided. When you select "Following" under the Browse tab you can scroll through thumbnails. Since people tend to post around the same time each day, you will gradually get a sense of when to expect new content.
